All students at Union Square Academy for Health Sciences have the opportunity to achieve a New York State Seal of Civic Readiness, a major academic accolade awarded at graduation that serves in replacement of 1 of 5 required Regents Exams. Members of the school’s Civics For All Team have collaborated on ways to infuse civics throughout students’ high school experience and align instruction to civic knowledge and engagement projects. In order to receive a seal of civic readiness, students must have earned enough knowledge and engagement points. See below. Accredited students will receive a graduation tassel designation, award & NYS diploma seal.
1. I completed, submitted and reflected on 2+ Civics Projects. Accredited civics projects (1.5) include 1.A formal Participatory Budgeting proposal for school 2.A Project Soapbox Speech 3.An Action Civics Project 4.A student government campaign video 5. A Storybooth Podcast. I completed and reflected on a CTE Internship, Civic related Internship or Extracurricular Activity such as PGC, Equity Team, Yearbook (0.5) 2. AND I passed my social studies classes (1), wrote a senior thesis (1), with extra credit awarded for AP social studies course (0.5), passing social studies regents (1-1.5 per exam).
